The first lady has provided scholarship for school pupils. The scholarship award is an annual event organized by the office of the first lady under the First lady’s attitudinal change in school’s project. FLAXIS to support underprivileged children in pursuit of education. The ceremony was held at the Miata conference hall, Brookfield’s.Kojo Kwafo Reports Since 2008 the first lady has been providing scholarships for underprivileged children across the country.The outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus prevented the annual event from being held in 2014.

However, the first lady was determined to continue with the project this year as most children have lost their parents who used to care for them and pay for their education.

Chairman for the event Rev. Modupeh taylor pearce applauded the first lady’s effort saying that the FLAXIS concept is good, the investment in the children superb and that the recipients are grateful.

Rev. Taylor Pearce says that because of the first lady’s initiative many people are now giving scholarships to unfortunate children. He called on other institutions to support the first lady’s initiative.

Mercury international has supported the first lady’s FLAXIS project since its inception in 2008 Hassan yasaniyeh is the chairman of the company.

 

Few months ago the Sierra Leone commercial bank made a donation to the office of the first lady to support the FLAXIS project the banks representative also witnessed the award ceremony. Other supporters of this year’s FLAXIS scholarship awards are FIMMET Construction Company, Rokel Commercial bank and Sierra Rutile

.Representing the CEO of Sierra Rutile Kholifa Kamara Taylor commended the first Lady and said that they are happy to support the first lady’s initiative. He commended the first Lady on her appointment as president of the African First Ladies peace mission, a position that goes to show how much the first lady sia Nyama Koroma is revered not only among her peers but the world over.

The Chinese Embassy through the wife of the Chinese Ambassador has also been very supportive of the initiative and other projects of the office of the first lady.

 

The wife of the Chinese ambassador Mrs. Mao zeuhong presented 50 school bags to the awardees of this year’s scholarships. Representing the ministry of social welfare gender and children’s affairs the deputy minister Mustapha bai Attila says that his ministry has provided interim care centers and child protection desks for children affected by Ebola. He says that child protection must be treated as a priority issue. The permanent secretary ministry of education says that his ministry has set up a working group to look into disadvantaged children’s issues to ensure every child get access to education and also to ensure that pregnant girls be encouraged to go back to school after delivery.

 

 

CONCEPT NOTE FIRST LADY ATTITUDINAL CHANGE IN SCHOOL (FLAXIS)

 

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

This concept note is for a collaboration project to be delivered by the Office of the First Lady in conjunction with the Presidential Committee on Attitudinal Change in Sierra Leone and other NGO’s. The Office of the First Lady initiated this project in support of the call for attitudinal change by the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone during his April 27, 2008 Independence celebration.

This call is visionary because it reflects the situation of the country. The President is concerned that until the country shares a common vision for development, underpinned by mutual respect and concern, it will be difficult for all citizens to work together. In support of this vision, the First Lady has decided to focus on school age children upon whom the future of this country rest. This project will examine the concept of attitudinal change in relation to inter-generational dynamics, bringing back family and societal values to education. It is anticipated that this project will instill in school age children, respect for person, property and environment. The concepts of attitudinal change will be integrated into the National Curriculum, drawing on current efforts to develop the emerging issues aspect of the school curriculum to take account of attitudes and behaviours as learning prerequisites.

 

The Project

The project will be termed the ‘The First Lady’s Attitudinal Change in Schools’ project. It will be known by the acronym FLAXIS. The project will be based within the Office of the First Lady but will be self accounting. The project will develop learning sets and other instructional and communication material to disseminate information about the concept for attitudinal and behavior change and their likely impact on development. The project will be time bound with a one year pilot and development phase being implemented in January 2009 – December 2009.

 

Aims and Objectives

The aims of the project are:

-         To provide practical training and guidance to all the school in Sierra Leone on attitudinal change.

-         To create a link or relationship between attitudinal and civic responsibilities

-         To design a behavior-change program, develop educational material, and tools for encouraging environmental and social awareness amongst young people.

The project objectives will include the following

-         Widening the understanding and acceptance of the concept of attitudinal change in the country

-         Creating an opportunity for a better awareness of good citizenship and how that impacts on development

-         Equipping young people for a better future by inculcating in them principles of good and active citizenship.

Delivery

The Project will be delivered in partnership with the Committee on Attitudinal Change, local and International NGO’s. So far the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Curriculum Unit at the NCTVA has been working with the Project to produce a curriculum on Civic Education. The Project Secretariat will be responsible for administration including identifying staff and resources necessary for its operations. The Office of the First will have supervisory oversight for the project. The delivery of the project will be mainly undertaken through activities such as:

-         Advocacy – using the profile of the office of the first Lady to send out positive messages about attitudinal and behavior change.

-         Communication – relaying on attitudinal change through school broadcasts, short skits and displays.

-         Information dissemination – send out messages through banners, posters and fliers.

-         Engagement – working with third party actors to engage them on issue relating to the project.

-         Networking – building networks for sustainable implementation of the project in school across the country.

Activities

The main activity of the project will be advocacy and information dissemination. This will be done by the combination of the following:

-         Reviewing and adapting text books into the school curriculum on attitudinal change;

-         Training – organizing workshop, seminars and retreat for teachers and students;

-         Radio Broadcast – weekly broadcasts across  the country by a roving panel of experts;

-         Television Programming – discussions from experts on the above project;

-         Speeches and public pronouncements;

-         Leaflets, posters, and fliers, magazines, comics etc…

-         -Resource packs for the children – “Love Mama Salone”, There is dignity in Labor”, ‘Love One Another”,  ‘Be a patriotic citizen’.

-         Inter School Competition

-         Website and electronic information media.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The project will integrate on-going monitoring and evaluation during the pilot phase. The project will make use of attendance register and data record sets to monitor beneficiaries and other stakeholders. Appraisal forms and other reporting tools will be used to evaluate the project against its stated objectives. The project will be reviewed and assessed to ascertain where it raises awareness of attitudinal and behavior change amongst school age children. The project will be considered successful if increasing numbers of school aged children become aware of the concept of attitudinal and behavior change and its impact on development.
