The initiative was started in 2009 as a means to transform and coordinate efforts of African First Ladies to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.  A long term objective of the summit in New York was to continue to develop the First Ladies efforts while in office and developing the tools that will allow them to continue their after leaving office. first lady group photo sept 23 rand-2The meeting also provided a week long programme for office staff of the First Ladies to further develop their programming capacity. For First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma, successes that have been fostered in part through participation in the RAND African First Ladies Initiative include effectively advocating for the improvement of women’s health in Sierra Leone. This includes fostering dialog with traditional and religious leaders to advocate for family and community support of women to have skilled attendance during childbirth, encouraging girl’s education, combating teenage pregnancy and combating gender based violence.
